The Continental Navy was founded
Although the Continental Navy would be disbanded, this is acknowledged as the birthdate of the U.S. Navy.
1794
The U.S. Navy is re-established with the launch of the “Six Original Frigates.” One of these, the USS Constitution, is still in service today as the oldest commissioned ship afloat.
1862
First use of ironclad ships
The USS Monitor engaged the CSS Virginia off Hampton Roads, VA.
1922
First Aircraft Carrier
The USS Langley was launched as a test platform for naval aviation.
World War II
Aircraft Carriers replace battleships as the dominate force used by the Navy. Aircraft Carriers are most famously used in the Doolittle
Raid on Tokyo and the Battle of Midway. Battleships are used mainly in support roles, particularly in amphibious assaults.
